Families in Transition, Inc., (FIT) is a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation dedicated to helping in-need families in the Trenton/Mercer County, New Jersey area by providing transitional housing and developmental services that allow families to transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency.
FIT’s main goal is to save intact families whose stability is threatened by current or impending homelessness or whose present accommodations are otherwise unsuitable. FIT temporarily places such families in housing acquired by FIT for that purpose, and then works to get them back on their feet and into permanent housing. (Please note: Although FIT states that the participants in the program are temporary, the clients are offered leases of at least six months in duration and have stayed with the program for up to two years, depending on need. Each client is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.)
FIT provides services to families from a broad spectrum of resources. Homeless families or those on the verge of homelessness have a laundry list of needs that one organization cannot fulfill. With the resources of other local charities and providers, FIT aids its families with family counseling, tutoring, food, job training, transportation, budgeting, and legal and other counseling.
It is the goal of FIT that its families leave the program with the tools necessary to obtain permanent housing and the skills to maintain their independence.
